New Treo 800W user here, doing the "initial setup"
« on: 06 October 2009, 08:52:34 » by RMasters
Hello all!
After some Palm devices and a Treo 700w, I now upgraded and got myself a 800w. Didn't want to go with the Pro, who knows what will be discovered on a new item (and considering the price I paid for the 800w, a joke!).
Anyhow, I'm currently in the process of setting it up, getting the essentials like screen protector, case, home charging craddle, all the good things. Am also looking into SD cards. The technical data sheet says it supports up to 8 GB. Has anyone any experience with larger capacity cards?
I'm a multimedia junkie, so storage is an issue, really. Am also looking in some basic applications. Most stuff I had on my 700w is outdated, I guess I have to start searching again.
Greetings!

My best guess is that if it supports 8GB, that means SDHC support, which is technically unlimited. I may be wrong through, so I would play it safe and get an 8GB. Do you have a need for a larger card?

Actually, it says it supports 8GB in standard SD, and SDHC. With SDHC, I think there would be a limit. I had to use a patch on my Dell Axim to use 16GB SDHC. And even though it worked, it was very slow when it came to moving data (PowerPoint presentatios, movies). Still images were fine. I agree, I'd rather be safe and go with what the manufacturer says. Yet, Dell told me 2 GB would be the maximum (Standard SD), and with WM6 and the last BIOS revision they sold the units, 4GB was actually the limit. I understand that the 800w is farily "new", so if they say 8GB, it might be the limit. Just thought I check. At the end, as you said, rather be safe than sorry. Yes, I do have a need for a larger card. Well, my spreadsheets I can handle, but the multimedia stuff (movies etc.) keeps adding up (just upgraded my C400 to a 1 TB harddrive). Thanks for the input. Very much appreciated. Greetings!

4GB cards and larger are SDHC. I used my 8GB microSDHC card in my 800w without any problems. SDHC support won't be the issue if it supposedly can't take cards larger than 8GB. With the Axim, because it's an older device, it probably lacked SDHC drivers. Once it has those drivers, support should be unlimited. Our store lists the 16GB microSDHC card as compatible with both the 800w and the Pro, so there's another hint that it might work. My guess would be that it will work fine. http://store.mytreo.net/content/accessories/7-128--4148.htm

See that's why I'm checking, too much guessing and other stuff. I.e: 4GB/8GB cards are available in "normal" SD standard and SDHC. I use it in my Axim which does not support SDHC cards (uses old revision 1). That's why my original question came up, cause why paying more for SDHC (in this case 8GB) if i can go with a cheaper regular SD card. It's not that much money, but a little bit will do. Thanks for the hint with the store item. I think I give that a try. If it doesn't work I can return it, as it is specifically for the 800w. Interesting price, $39.95? Don't see a reason why I should pay i.e. Radio Shack (excuse me, The Shack ) $119.99. I know, the name, right? Guess I just pump it full with data and see what's happening. Poor Treo, not even broken in yet and already being benchmarked. Greetings!

I know that 4GB is available in both formats, but as far as I know, 8GB (for microSD at least) is only SDHC from major manufacturers. Yow, that is a rather high price...not to mention sales tax (almost 10% here )...

Yep, the price.
Sure, there are "Premium" cards and No-Name cards. But, "NoName" very often only states that the user doesn't know about it.
I am using Topram cards, unknown over here, the company is the 5th largest manufacturer or something like that? My oldest card is a little over 4 years old. I never had any issues with any of these cards. One is almost permanently running in a camera, so heavenly used.
Last week I exchanged another ScanDisk card. Was 3 months old, the 2nd time these cards failed. Next time I get my money back and buy, well "NoName"? LOL
Guess some get lucky, and some not.
On a side note: I'm running WM6 on my Axim, and thus it's supposed to support SDHD cards, it only works correctly (I mean 100%) with the additional driver. Don't know if this is right or not, but oh well.
Greetings!

The majority of the time, these "noname" brands do not offer a warranty, or offer short ones. SanDisk has a five-year one, and Kingston is lifetime. With this kind of guarantee, I would be pretty confident in buying.

I agree. Except, running back to the store for exchanging adds up to. If you buy it in a store. Mailing means even more hazzle, envelope, postage, etc. etc.
Of course, only if you have issues. I seem to be in bad luck with Kingston.
Right now I'm doing some calculations to see what speed (the new rating) would be appropiate. I use a 150x SD card in my PDA, everything runs fine and dandy. I saw the store sells the 2x speed (new rating). Wonder which one would be appropiate.

Well, one forever stamp took care of my 8GB, so it's all good with me. Got a retail package as well as an adapter in exchange for the microSD that came installed in the BB Storm.
As for speeds, I wouldn't worry about it too much. There's no need to get a faster card if the price is different, as the speed bottleneck probably isn't the card itself. It's likely that the faster card will not make any difference at all.

Well, I've had the 800w for awhile now, about a year, a bit more, and I've been using a few Kingston 8gb microSDHC cards pretty much since I got the phone. $15 each, came with a carrying case, two adapters, and a little USB reader. Speedy, cheap, does what I need. I primarily use them to store music, but I do have one loaded up with movies for boredom, and they're plenty fast for that. You are fighting a slow processor and miniscule vid chip, but I get no stutter or dropped frames on a properly encoded video (I actually do mine at 480x480, closest I could get to the 800w's square screen). Those would work fine for you. Newegg carries them, easy to find. I believe you do have to stick with SDHC, though, I doubt the large SD cards will work (different standard, requires a capable reader).
As far as larger, I dunno. Been tempted to pick up a 16gb card, but with the four 8 giggers I have, there's no real need, that's more than enough for my needs.
