8 GB Micro SDHC card formated with fat 32 and 16 K on Centro
« on: 22 April 2008, 16:45:34 » by nimra
Hey I wanted to share this, as I did not see any thing like that in the forum: I formated my 8 gb micro sdhc card from sandisk with 16 clusters, by using the "DOS box", (while card was in cardreader) with the following comand: format X: /FS:FAT32 /A:16K X stands for the drive name the card has on your pc. AND WOW... is this card fast; I've never seen opening database, songs, videos faster !!! This should be working for all cards (also SD) higher than 4 GB, per Mr. Skybert http://www.skybert.de/archiv/archiv0612.htm#erkenntnissethe link shows his work and tests with cards, unfortunately only in German brds, nimra

Here's the best way to do it, compliments of the Duck:
Put the card in the card reader Right-click on My Computer, then select Manage Double-click Disk Management Right-click on the drive that represents your card Select Format In the drop-down box for Allocation Unit Size, change it from Default to 32K Click OK

Thanks for the help, Lizzrd! (As soon as I look up how to give a kudo, one will come your way!) For some reason, the built-in card reader on my laptop will not recognize my 8GB micro, but when I use the USB card reader, it recognized it. Disk Management showed that it is already formatted with a FAT32 file system and 7.6 GB of free space. Now I will play with it on my Centro!

I have received the typical goofy readings on the amount of free space available, since the card is bigger than 4GB. My favorite was from the program "FileZ" which gave the amount of free space as a negative number!!
CardReader says I have 7.6GB free, so I think I am good. I was concerned since the card came formatted - I was wondering if I should have formatted it myself just to be safe. Only time will tell, I guess.

When I wrote that post. I had a 8GB card for over a year with no problems. I now have a 16GB card that works just fine. Pocket tunes sync is the only issue I've had where it only syncs 4GB automatically. I can still drag and drop files just fine.

I think Palm Centro phone only allow 4GB max. 8GB will not do any good.
You are sooo incorrect it handles above 4GB just fine it just shows you it in 4GB chunks so if you have 3.0 GB filled of a 16GB card it show's 1.0 GB free 3.0GB used if you have 7.0 GB of a 16GB it'll show 1.0 GB Free 3.0 GB used etc
