trydaTM (also known originally as Directory Assistant, by Rick Whitt) is a freeware app designed to connect you to the businesses, people, products and services you want, whenever and wherever you want. And tryda
TM is one of the simplest and fastest ways to get 411 information on your mobile device.
Key Features:
- Dial query results directly with one tap
- Find Business Name
- Find Residential Name
- Neighbors: Find businesses or houses that surround an address
- Reverse Query by Phone or Address
- Directions
- Maps
- My tryda: save complete listings - or sets of listings - for immediate repeat viewing
- Use the three-digit airport code to specify the location of your query
- Auto-notification in tryda when an update is available
Major benefits of tryda
TM include:
Fast: trydaTM is fast... much faster than a browser-based search. The trydaTM application resides on your phone, so it opens instantly and allows you to submit your query and receive your response within seconds. No need to wait for browser or map pages to load before you can get started. Get maps or directions, as well.
Efficient: trydaTM is very lightweight, with a very small memory footprint. Plus, because the application and many of your settings, preferences and templates are in resident memory, the amount of data that passes over the mobile network is minimized, further speeding the response.
Free to Download and Use: If you have an unlimited data plan through your mobile carrier, there is no added cost to you to use trydaTM. If you have a data plan that is not unlimited, you will incur data charges from your carrier when using it. But trydaTM minimizes the amount of data transferred because much of what you see is already in your device's memory and it doesn't load data-intensive maps from the Web just to get a result (you can do that after you get your results). This speeds up the process, and conserves your data usage, saving you time and money.
Please be sure when registering and activating tryda to check your spam filter for activation emails. If the email is not received, one can be resent by visiting http://www.tryda.com/Public/ResendConfirmation.aspx

mjdenes: it does not work now but when it works ,it is fantastic! Waiting for a new working version......................
gsjames1974: I do not know why people give this one star. It does not work. Keep getting this error:
-YP.com had no matches
-Communication Error
-Results format error
-Busy server
-Server error
faslane: anychance we can get a beta of the new fixed version soon? Thisapp worked great, then I get all these errors, and hsn't worked at all...bummed, a very valuable tool.
thanks,
Faslane
cr4west: I installed DA 3.31 on two Sprint Treo 650's and after considerable delay get "error executing query! possible reasons...." on both pda's.
Able to access yp.com quickly using default blazer browser so access is NOT the problem.
Is there a programming query issue here?
I suggest everyone wait for updated version 3.32!
I rate it a 5 as non-working, 9 if it gets fixed.
Izaacg816: I have the same problem as treo650rxsd on my Sprint 650. Please somebody fix this because I love the app (when its working).
treo650rxsd: great program on my treo 650!
but it does not work on my treo 700p - I get a Query Error message displays - " Error executing Query! Possible reasons:
-YP.com had no matches
- Communication Error
- Results format error
- Busy server
-Server error"
I have tryed to verify each error by trying different phone numbers, contacts - different times of days...
Please fix this bug - because I can't do without this program!! Thanks.
dwerlin: This is an awesome program. I have become an addict. I have to admit that I don't usually think to pay for donationware - but with the last fix that redid the mapping I snapped out of it. I do hope you can fix some of the current issues with yp - but based on your track record, I have little doubt. Thanks for an invaluable program that should come as standard on every Treo.
mrcampbell06: THanks rick .we are looking forward to it..Is it a way you can make it so that us with the Palm OS can call the numbers we find as well
rlwhitt: From today's forum post:
Loyal Directory Assistant users:
Based on the large number of emails that I have received, I wanted to let you all you know what’s happening with Directory Assistant (DA). I have some exciting things in the works, and will be re-launching an improved version of the application very soon. As part of that process, several users have been Beta testing the new version of DA. Unfortunately, the directory data provider made some significant changes recently without any advanced warning. I’m working on a fix for that, along with the aforementioned changes, and will make them available to you in the very near future. Thank you for your patience and continued support. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or feedback. (rlwhitt-palm@triad.rr.com)
Thank you,
Rick Whitt
bnotarius: Today is the 7th of August and I still can not use the DA program. I always get query errors not.. I sure miss this program. Any idea as to when it will start working again???

- Added ability to reset your Password, by request
Version 1.08 - 4/28/2008
- Added support for proxy server-based access (for certain T-mobile users)
- Added Clear Data feature in Main Menu - clears user's registration screen on the device only (prevents having to delete, reinstall if you wish to re-register)
- Fixed bug where directions database would eventually become corrupt and cause a reset
Version 1.07 - 3/24/2008
- Added a data backup and restore feature. This allows the user to either back up his/her data manually, or automatically each time the application exits. The data is backed up to the SD card, and can be used to restore all your tryda data in the event of having to do a reinstall after a hard reset or moving to a new device.
- Directions now viewable in trydaTM.
- Change email function (in trydaTM only, not on the Web).
- Change password function (in trydaTM only, not on the Web).
- Added forgot password service to trydaTM (was already on the Web).
- Added some validation for properly formed email addresses, plus elimination of possible embedded carriage returns (return key mistakenly hit at end of email field).
- Added expanded edit capability for potentially long fields such as email addresses, to avoid the confusion of scrolling the text "off the end" of a field.
- Added the text "Main Menu" to the main menu page's title bar.
- Removed the leading spaces from the icon name. The application will no longer sort to the top of the launcher list.
- Now checks to see if the GoogleMaps.prc file on the SD card is actually an installer, and if so does not attempt to execute it.
Version 1.05 - 1/13/08
- Registration page changes: All email and password fields moved to 2nd page. Provide 2 email address and 2 password fields and verify that they match, to avoid inadvertent data entry errors. Also no longer displays password on screen in clear text - instead user must click on a trigger box that either says "Assigned" or "Unassigned", depending on whether the password has been entered.
- When using the Save to Favorites feature, the favorite name is pre-populated based on the search criteria used to create the results.
- Miscellaneous UI and usability tweaks.
v1.00 (24 December 2007)
- Initial Public Release of tryDA (remake of DA)
(Old version - Directory Assistant)
v3.31 (05/30/07)
- Added support for Treo 755P
v3.30 (04/09/07)
- Fixed stupid programmer error, sending garbage in search fields from the Maps query screen.
v3.29 (04/07/07)
- Removed support for Mapquest for maps and directions. All map and direction functions now use Google. Removed the Map Type selection from Preferences. IMPORTANT: If you use the GoogleMaps application it must be in main memory for DA to find it.
- Added Clear, Contacts, and Airport buttons to the Map Query screen. They work just like their counterparts on the Directions screen. You can also manually enter a 3-letter airport code here or in directions without using the lookup. If you enter a 3-letter code and request Map, the code is validated against the internal list, state and city are ignored.
- No longer including the NoAir version.
v3.28 2 Feb 2007
- Fixed Residential searches!
v3.27 (17 January 2007)
- Added ability to call the new GoogleMaps application when using the Map button from results or the Main screen. If you have selected Google Maps in preferences for your map type, DA will attempt to locate and launch the GoggleMaps.prc for displaying the map. If this fails, it defaults to going to Google maps in the web browser like previous versions.
- Recognize the latest Treo 680.
v3.26 (16 August 2006)
- Added new preference for Map Type. Selections are MapQuest & Google Maps. IMPORTANT - This is only for MAPS, NOT Directions. Directions still always use MapQuest. Note that on some devices Google maps may not display at all. To get a large version of the map images on Treos, you'll want to set your browser view to Wide Page Mode. In Optimized mode, the bitmap is reduced to fit within the browser window, but it still produces a bit better map than the MapQuest PDA version.
- Added new Maps button on main screen to provide a simple address, city, state, zip entry form (with data saved between sessions for later) to whichever map type (Google or MapQuest) you've got selected to use.
- Added new preference for Directions Destination, replacing the previously added checkbox Send Directions to Memo. Now the choices are "Browser", "Memo + Go To", "Memo Save Only", and "Ask Each Time". The first choice calls up your selected browser with the MapQuest Directions URL. The second choice parses the result of a directions query into a new memo record and switches to the Memos application with that new record showing. The third option creates the memo, but does not change over to the Memos application. The final option forces a dialog box to appear on each directions search to give you the choice among the other 3 options.
- Fixed for no longer getting multi-page business results.
- Upon re-entry to a screen where the first field has text, it will be
highlighted, thus making it easier to start a new query by just starting to
type.
- Removed dialer type preference, force to direct dial on new installs. Needed
space on the screen and this option only applied to a couple of older smartphone types no longer in widespread use.
- Change to only send first 3 digits of Canadian Postal Codes to maps and directions, as the 2nd 3 digits would result in MapQuest errors.
- More intelligent handling of directions response containing: "MapQuest found a similar location" when using directions to memo feature. DA will attempt to execute the requery that the page is suggesting, with MapQuest's suggested changes to input parameters. DA will warn you when this happens, as the resulting requery MAY not be what you really wanted.
- Renamed the "Addr Book" buttons on the Directions screen "Contacts" to reflect the application name that is in common use on later devices.
v3.25 (1 Aug 2006)
- Added Total Distance and Esitmated Drive Time to directions sent to Memo record.
- For directions sent to Memo, DA will now swap out to the memo application showing the just-added record.
v3.24 (2 July 2006)
- FINALLY, solved the crash on upgrade to new version. No longer any need to uninstall old version before installing new version! Many thanks to "dgmanns" on pdaPhoneHome.com for revealing the information that has resolved this problem!
- Also FINALLY, hopefully a fix for Treo Copy to Contacts crashes. I have changed the method of adding these (and old Address Book app as well) to use local Exchange Manager instead of manipulating the database files directly. This should be much more reliable. Can't be any worse!
- Added a new feature to Directions. You can now elect to send a parsed version of the directions to a Memo record. A new Preferences checkbox has been added - "Send Directions to Memo". If checked, a successful directions result will be placed in a memo record, in the category of your choice. This way you can save often used directions for later use or do a number of directions queries prior to needing them.
- Fixed for Phone # reverse query putting things in the wrong place, since no name is returned for these.
- Fixed for Business results without addresses having city/state/zip and phone # fields shifted up a line
v3.22 (22 Nov 2005)
- Fixed error on first residential search result.
3.21 (9/29/05)
- Fixed performance issues when adding a result entry as a Contact on Treo 650.
- Made the new MapQuest URL the default.
- Fixed crash when deleting last Results record.
3.20 (7/11/05)
- Adds support for proxy servers
3.11 (5/26/05)
- Fix for some users (mostly Sprint) getting different formatted results for Residential and Reverse lookups.
- Catch "DENIED" message some users have gotten from yp.com.
3.10 (3/19/05)
VERY IMPORTANT - MUST READ FOR VERSION 3.10 & Later!
It WILL be necessary to completely delete any version older than 3.10 (with the App Launcher!) of DA before loading version 3.10 or later! A crash WILL most likely result if you don't! See the da_readme.txt file for details on how you may be able to save Frequently Used Strings file.
- Reverse lookups. Types include Phone #, Address, or Neighbor searches.
- Added the capability to use Airports as origins and destinations for Driving Directions. Enter a 3 letter code or use an online lookup of 379 US airports.
- Added an "Include Surrounding Area" checkbox to Business Query to broaden the search.
- Canadian Provinces are now available for Business searches, Maps, and Directions.
- MapQuest Direction URL updated to one that is more current and allows Canadian routings.
- MapQuest Map URL is now a choice for USA results. Can select a more up to date, better looking map.
- Fixed Error in getting multi-page business results. A formatting change in the results pages from yp.com had to be accomodated.
- Fixed the Treo 5-Way nav behavior for the Results List.
- Fix for capturing redirects that come from yp.com, particularly the case where a business name is not found in the specified city, but there are some in surrounding areas.
- New preference for "Warn on Empty City".
- Added Xiino as a browser option, plus added a field to enter the 'Creator ID' of any browser not on the hard coded list.
- Added Option to cancel multipage searches.
- Enhanced the generic error message for a failed search (The old "Error 0").
- Other miscellaneous changes and fixes.
3.10 Beta 6 (uninstall versions prior to b3 first)
- I broke Directions completely in B5. Fixed now!
- There are now 2 versions of the program PRC file. The normal one (DA.PRC) that has all the features, and a smaller version (DA_NoAir.PRC) that has no support for airports in the directions query. The airports data adds as much as 40K, and if you never need directions to/from airports, you can save yourself a little memory. Otherwise the 2 PRCs are identical.
3.10 Beta 5 (uninstall versions prior to b3 first)
- Opened up phone number field in Reverse lookup to accept any characters, up to 20 in length. This will allow pasting of phone numbers from other places. DA will strip any non-numerics prior to search.
- Added Xiino to the Available Browser List
- Added a 4 character text field in Preferences to allow entry of any 'Creator ID' for a browser you may have that's not listed. You can see this id in most file managers. It must be entered EXACTLY as it shows in the file manager - case matters! Note also that some browsers might not support being supplied a URL as a launch parameter. If this is the case (browser will start, but the page you expect will not show), then this browser will not work with DA.
3.10 Beta 4 (uninstall versions prior to b3 first)
- Many reverse queries (particulary if they are businesses) are receiving no name from yp.com. If this happens, DA will put the text "No Name Returned" in the name field place to make it clear what has happened.
- Fix for some funky formatting on some biz entries that resulted from no exact result/auto surrounding searches.
- Fix for doing more than one airport lookup on the directions page going to wrong record after first lookup.
3.10 Beta 3 (uninstall previous version first)
- Reverse lookups! New button on main screen takes you to a screen where you can do Phone #, Address, or Neighbor searches. See docs below for details.
- In Driving Directions, Airport list will scroll to first matching state if there is a valid state code entered.
- New preference "Warn on Empty City". If checked a confirmation dialog will be shown for leaving the city blank on either residential or business query, or checking surrounding area in business. This warning exists because these queries can return many results, but now that there is an option to cancel a long query while in progress, a user many not want this dialog popping up each time. Defaults to checked for new installs.
3.10b2 (uninstall previous version first)
- Added the capability to use Airports as origins and destinations for Driving Directions.
- Fixed the Treo 5-Way nav behavior for the Results List.
- Fix for capturing redirects that come from yp.com, particularly the case where a business name is not found in the specified city, but there are some in surrounding areas.
- Added option: "Force To: for Results->Directions".
- Added Option to cancel multipage results to preferences.
- Changed the 'City' label on Business query to 'City or Zip' to reflect the fact that you can enter a Zip code instead of city.
- Removed Web Clipping as a browser option, since the proxy service that it used was closed down and it's no longer operable.
- Reduced the two browser choices in preferences to just a single one.
3.10b1
- Fixed Error in getting multi-page business results. A formatting change in the results pages from yp.com had to be accomodated.
- Added an "Include Surrounding Area" checkbox to Business Query. This will broaden the search by a good bit, and as a result may result in a long multipage result. A warning about this is added to the existing one about leaving the city field blank.
- Canadian Provinces are now available for Business searches, Maps, and Directions.
- MapQuest Direction URL updated to one that is more current and allows Canadian
routings.
- MapQuest Map URL is now a choice for USA results. The old map is left as an option because the new Map, while it is nicer looking and probably more up to date, seems to come up VERY slowly. Therefore there is a new option on the Preferences screen to use the new map URL for USA. Note that for any query result in Canada, the new map URL is automatically used since the old one does not support Canada.
- Enhanced the generic error message for a failed search. The old "Error 0" will no longer be shown as it is not very informative (and no valid error number was ever reported from the HTTP routines anyway, so it was always error 0 regardless of the problem). It has been replaced with a list of several possible reasons for the error, namely:
- YP.com had no matches
- Communication Error
- Results format error
- Busy server
- Server error
It often helps to debug the possible problems to go directly to m.yp.com via a desktop browser and try the query interactively. Directory Assistant is merely doing the query for you and extracting the data from the results page. If a valid result is obtained in a normal browser environment, the problem could be formatting change by yp.com that has broken the ability of DA to parse valid data.
